Ursuline Sisters, visitors and the college community gathered April 23 for Women Watch, a campus walk and service remembering the people of Cuyahoga County who lost their lives at the hands of violence during the past year. Each victim's name was mentioned and prayed over by participants. This annual vigil is sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland and Ursuline College Art Students for Peace and Justice. It is designed to raise awareness of the toll violence takes on God's people, and to help foster a non-violent society.

Renaissance Artist Tiziano Vecellio (1485-1576), who painted the famous "Pentecost," was a contemporary to Ursuline Foundress Saint Angela Merici (1474-1540). It's likely they crossed paths during Vecellio's eight years in Italy.

What is Pentecost?

Pentecost commemorates the early church's reception of the Holy Spirit. Following Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples were told to wait in Jerusalem for God’s gift of the Holy Spirit. On the Day of Pentecost, just as promised, tongues of fire came to rest on each of them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They were given the power to witness to the risen Christ. The disciples did not remain in the room relishing God’s presence and power, but joyfully went out to tell the world. This was the beginning of the Church as we know it.
We all have the same Spirit that was poured out upon the first century church. It is now our turn to live our lives committed to Christ and to witness to the presence of the Spirit in our world, whether that is in our homes, neighborhood or workplace.
